If you are reading this it’s because I most likely click bated you by using Donald Trumps famous sound bite for describing how he feels about most of our national media outlets. For once I am on the same page as President Trump. Please don’t mistake this as me finally supporting him, but along the lines of even a broken clock is right twice a day.
In an effort to cut back on the daily negativity I have drastically cut back my amount of news consumption over the years. I try and limit myself to one helping of the daily news broadcast and maybe a couple of other news articles throughout the day. Unfortunately, I can’t live under a rock because being completely ignorant of my local, national, and world goings on doesn’t jive well with my scouting background. I figure if I can keep to the amount of “bad” news I am exposed to limited to that which I am legally obligated or feel ethically compelled to deal with then all the better.
Another reason I look to minimize the amount of daily news intake is because I don’t have the time to fact check everything. All to often reporters are in a race to get their story pushed out to the masses without having their story straight. Can’t tell you how many times I read or watch something from some news outlet only to found out sometimes hours later that they were only kind of right or completely off target. I equate this to one of my students rushing to get their paper turned into me first so they can get the special prize I may be offering, but forgets that the work also needs to be correct as well.
Let me put a button on this. More often than not I am turning to YouTube channels to get most of my national and global news any more and then I follow it up with the national “main stream” media sources. I do view this as more of a sign of the changing times, but there is also a healthy dose of not being able to trust the main stream sources as well.
On a daily basis I watch and hear people complain about or be offended by some of the dumbest things. Seriously, the amount of nonsensical things is staggering. (One would think based on how little time we have to complete life’s daily tasks some of these “issues” would be nonissues. How the internet hasn’t collapsed yet in on itself yet I continually wonder. All of this is a large chunk of the reasons why I have drastically reduced how much of local and national news I consume. My brain is only capable of handling so much.
I have also reduced my online interactions with the various news outlets, especially, their social media presences. It is truly astounding how many people will run with something and have nothing more than a few bullet points. (The accuracy of which is more often than not questionable.) Sometimes these people I speak of are the very news reporters we watch on a daily basis. Ignorance is still bliss apparently.
Now I know that I sometimes do this myself and bitch about something that really isn’t anything. Please note that I also try and impart something useful in each post and am not easily offended.
Let me simplify things by providing a brief list of things that I find acceptable for people to be offended by and can complain about.
-Providing enough food for all the worlds population
-Providing access to clean water for all the worlds population
– Providing adequate housing for all the worlds population
– Global climate change
– Raising the minimum wage across the board
These are in no particular order, just as they popped into my head, Most will call these delusions of grandeur, but I will continue to dream big.
Rarely will I watch the news or read the paper anymore. Even the different news outlets online components I don’t really frequent. The question most people ask me, “How do you stay informed?” Well, I’m probably under informed with certain things other wise I’m probably only 24 hours behind in most aspects.
I have watched most news outlets devolve from respectable journalism, to lets jazz things up a bit, to we need to get more eyeballs over here how can we spin this to get attention. More and more often I am seeing/hearing reporters just get things blatantly wrong and just rolling with it. I know if your live or trying to roll something quick, but how much of an idiot are you willing to look like and how often do you have to apologize of inaccuracies. Most news organizations have a legion of fact checkers. USE THEM!!!
When I do take interest in something I will normally seek out multiple sources about the subject at hand to do my own fact checking which is ridiculous, but it is what it is. I also sometimes have to wade through the quagmire of political bullshit surrounding a subject just to see the root matter.
It’s also annoying at how much negativity is harped on. I realize that this is what sells and gets more eyeballs on news channel A over news channel B, but I don’t need to get depressed while watching the news. Yes, a bunch of bad stuff may have happened that day, week, month, etc… but lets balance it a little better.
One of the things that I have to laugh at is people who bitch about how inaccurate sometimes the weather forecasters are on the local news channels. Let’s get a couple of things straight.
First off despite the advancements in technology and methodology over the years it is still not an exact science. There are dozen’s of factors that can skew a weather forecast even at the last second. I realize that the average individual has most likely forgotten what they had learned from middle school Earth and Space science classes which is why this leads to the cranky comments from viewers.
The average salary for a meteorologist can be somewhere in the six figure neighborhood. Based on the schooling and work they do I would say this is a justified salary. When it comes to being one of the forecasters on TV I would definitely say this is justified because now we are asking a scientist to convert the data they have obtained into to easily understandable charts, graphs, and maps for the rest of the world to see and understand. Where I join the rest of the pissed off masses is when the weather person isn’t a meteorologist, but a TV personality.
Although this person did have to sit and take the time to learn some of the science behind it, it only accounts for some of it. There is a disconnect on a certain level because they are not going to be able to convey a message clearly because they may not understand a concept fully especially in a situation where weather conditions may make a quick change. This is definitely one those jobs where its best left to the professionals.
