Insurance cards should be kept on your person at all times. Treat it like you would your photo ID. Which is another thing in and of itself. It astounds me how many people walk into the pharmacy as brand new patients and look at me like I have three heads when I ask for their insurance cards. “I didn’t bring it with me.” Is a bullshit excuse. Bet you remembered to bring your cellphone.
This is one of the instances where the patient needs to take some personal responsibility. Much like a police officer is going to pay little credence for you not having your drivers license I’m of the same mind. You want to drive, have your ID on you. You want prescription filed, have your ID on you.
Some pharmacies do have database search tools, but it is a limited function tool. Until all the insurances willingly give open access to their databases the search tool will not be fully actualized. Even then its up to them to keep it updated and that’s a infrequent issue.
